Sustainable Hydration Solutions for Running (and Other!) Events

In recent years, the running community has taken significant steps toward reducing its environmental footprint. However, one glaring issue still prevails in many races worldwide—plastic water bottles. In 2023, Americans consumed 15.94 billion gallons of bottled water, which is a 34% increase since 2012. (BottledWater.org) While convenient, their use poses a considerable threat to our planet, with billions ending up in landfills and oceans every year. For event organizers, eco-conscious runners, and sustainability advocates, finding alternatives is not just an option but a responsibility.

The Environmental Impact of Plastic Water Bottles

Plastic bottles take centuries to decompose, and their production contributes to carbon emissions. By choosing sustainable solutions, event organizers can significantly lower the environmental impact of their events, aligning with global efforts towards a healthier planet. Start evaluating options well in advance of your event to develop and plan and engage your sponsors and participants in the efforts!

Alternative Options for Sustainable Hydration

1. Reusable Water Bottles and Cups

Encourage participants to bring their own reusable bottles or cups. Event sponsors can even provide branded reusable cups as part of the race kit, creating a unique keepsake while promoting sustainability.

2. Water Refill Stations and Innovative Water-Dispensing Systems

Water Stations and Systems are another great way to identify and engage sponsors. Set up strategically placed water refill stations along the racecourse. These stations can be easily filled from larger water sources, such as tankers, eliminating the need for individual plastic bottles and providing runners with easy access to hydration. With support from a 2023 Rockfall Foundation grant, the Chester Fair purchased and implemented the use of a Water Monster Hydration System, significantly decreasing the sales of bottled water. Connecticut Water Company has provided a stand-alone water unit (the “Water Buffalo”) for the Ivoryton Library’s annual Pumpkin Chase 5K. Explore technologies like edible water pods or advanced water-dispensing systems that reduce plastic waste. Collaborate with innovative companies to bring these cutting-edge solutions to your event. An example are small pumps that fit 5-gallon reusable water bottles, allowing participants to dispense water easily into compostable cups or their reusable bottle.

3. Compostable Cups

If reusable options aren’t feasible, consider using compostable cups made from biodegradable materials. They break down faster and more safely than traditional plastic options, leaving minimal environmental impact. The Rockfall Foundation has partnered with Blue Earth Compost at The Greater Old Saybrook Chamber Chili Fest to create and monitor composting stations to decrease the trash generated, and sponsors compostable water cups at the Chamber’s annual August 5K race.

4. Portable Hydration Packs

Partner with sponsors to offer hydration packs or belts that can be filled and refilled at stations throughout the event. This option allows runners to carry their water supply, reducing the need for disposable cups or bottles.

Benefits of Going Plastic-Free

The advantages of eliminating plastic go beyond environmental preservation. Sustainable practices can enhance your event’s reputation, attract eco-conscious sponsors, and create a healthier community of runners who are invested in the planet’s future.
