SUMMARY:Learn How To Identify and Manage Invasive Plants In Your Back Yard
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1680794568943{margin-top: 0px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1680794724938{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nThis event is co-sponsored\nby Everyone Outside\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1677252901273{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Join us at the Rockfall Forest in Middlefield\, CT\, for an Educational Invasive Plant Workshop and Cleanup Party.  \nYou will learn how to identify and remove some of the more aggressive invasives in our state: garlic mustard\, barberry\, Asian bittersweet\, honeysuckle\, privet\, autumn olive\, Japanese knotweed\, multiflora rose\, and winged euonymus (burning bush)\, to name a few. \nWhat to Bring: Bring clippers and gloves if you have them; a limited supply will be available. Tick repellant is suggested. \nBonus: You will have a chance to sample two invasive plant recipes from previously harvested Garlic Mustard. We will provide recipe cards you can bring home. Yes\, invasives may be a nuisance\, but they can also be tasty! \nWhat are Invasive Plants?  \nUCONN’s Invasive Plants Council best describes invasive plants as “non-native plants that are disruptive in a way that causes environmental or economic harm or harm to human health. In minimally managed areas\, invasive plants crowd out native plants. The presence of invasive plants alters how plants\, animals\, soil\, and water interact within native ecosystems\, often causing harm to other species in addition to the plants that have been crowded out.” \nLocation: Meet at 9:45 in the Middlefield Memorial School parking lot\, 124 Hubbard St\, Middlefield\, CT. Heavy rain cancels. \nRegister here: https://forms.gle/fngYEDTVVNUgsepR6 \nWhat is Rockfall Forest? \nThe trails in Rockfall Forest provide an important entry point to Wadsworth Falls State Park\, connecting the orange Main Trail from Cherry Hill Road into the Park\, and offering the yellow Laurel Grove Brook Trail. The history of these two properties link Colonel Wadsworth’s Legacy and The Rockfall Foundation. From potato farm to wild forest to outdoor classroom\, Rockfall Forest has a story to tell. \nColonel Clarence S. Wadsworth founded Rockfall Corporation (now The Rockfall Foundation) in 1935 “to establish\, maintain\, and care for parks and forest or wild land for the use and enjoyment of the public”. One of the Colonel’s land holdings was a large plot in Middlefield and Rockfall. He entrusted the land to Rockfall Corporation\, with a small section known as “The Captain’s Field” retained for use by his son\, Seymour Wadsworth. \nIn 1941\, after Colonel Wadsworth’s death\, the largest portion of the land\, 267 acres known as the “Great Falls Region” was donated by Rockfall Corporation to the Connecticut State Park and Forest commission. The State still maintains this land\, the present day Wadsworth Falls State Park. Adjacent Captain’s Field\, in the meantime\, was leased out by Seymour and used for potato farming in the 1940s and 1950s. After Seymour’s passing\, Captain’s Field was transferred to Rockfall Corporation for preservation. To this day\, The Rockfall Foundation continues to protect these remaining 16 acres of land\, which has reverted to forest since farming was abandoned. No longer a field\, The Rockfall Foundation adopted the name Rockfall Forest in 2020.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”15305″ img_size=”medium”][vc_single_image image=”15310″ img_size=”medium”][vc_single_image image=”15312″ img_size=”medium”][vc_single_image image=”15306″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dimension=”flat” corner_style=”pointed” size=”large” letter_spacing=”0″ icon=”” icon_anim=”none” target=”_self” nofollow=”false” align=”center” button_custom_width=”0″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”15″ margin_right=”15″ outline_skin=”dark” outline_active_color=”” outline_active_text_color=”” outline_hover_bg_color=”” outline_hover_color=”” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” text_color=”light” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”][vc_column][mk_button dimension=”flat” corner_style=”rounded” size=”large” url=”https://forms.gle/fngYEDTVVNUgsepR6″ target=”_blank” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”]Sign-up Form[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:CANCELED- Spring Hike Around Bushy Hill Lake - Deep River\, CT
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1682688607738{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\nThe spring hike scheduled for Saturday\, April 29\, at the Bushy Hill Nature Center has been canceled due to the expected rain and wind coming into our area this weekend. However\, due to Jen Malaguti’s busy spring and summer schedule with Bushy Hill\, we will reschedule the hike sometime in the fall. I will inform everyone who signed up for the event when we have a rescheduled date set. We will also post on our website\, e-news\, and social media at that time.\n  \nJoin Bushy Hill Nature Center’s Jen Malaguti on a spring hike around the Bushy Hill Lake at Incarnation Center. Learn about the flora and fauna found on this hidden 740-acre gem in Deep River. \nThe 3.5-mile hike will take you through the protected habitat of the endangered Atlantic White Cedar trees\, across the earthen dam at the end of the lake\, and through a glacial erratic up to the beautiful Lookout Point\, overlooking the mile-long lake. This moderately difficult trail wraps around the north end of the lake to where the beaver lodge can easily be viewed. The hike will circle back to the beginning\, but not before swinging by the Bushy Hill Farm where you can say a quick hello to the animals that will surely greet you by the fence. \nWalking at a leisurely pace\, the hike will take approximately 3 hours. Participants should have a water bottle and are encouraged to bring a light snack. Sneakers or hiking boots are recommended. \nPlease park in the dirt parking lot across from the Nature Center. As you enter the property at 253 Bushy Hill Rd\, Deep River\, drive past the Welcome Center and the small pond on your left. \nThe nature center will be the next building on your right. \n\n\nJoin us on Saturday\, April 29 at 9:00 AM. \n3 +/- hour moderate hike.\nTrail Map: Download here \nSign-up by clicking the botton below. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”15289″ img_size=”medium”][vc_single_image image=”15261″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dimension=”flat” corner_style=”pointed” size=”large” letter_spacing=”0″ icon=”” icon_anim=”none” target=”_self” nofollow=”false” align=”center” button_custom_width=”0″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”15″ margin_right=”15″ outline_skin=”dark” outline_active_color=”” outline_active_text_color=”” outline_hover_bg_color=”” outline_hover_color=”” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” text_color=”light” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”][vc_column][mk_button dimension=”flat” corner_style=”rounded” size=”large” url=”https://forms.gle/8q3PrtKEfZtsqJ8p6″ target=”_blank” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”]Sign-up Form[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row]
