A researcher and artist\, Dr. Owens has spent the last year creating a series of forty-six life-sized portraits of animals harmed by marine debris. She creates most of the pieces herself by hand sewing film plastic onto canvas\, but the largest pieces (including three life-sized whales) are being co-created with the public. \nDr. Katharine Owens is a Professor in the Department of Politics\, Economics\, and International Studies and Director of the University Interdisciplinary Studies program at the University of Hartford. Her work has been supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, the National Geographic Society\, the Fulbright Nehru program\, and the Connecticut Office of the Arts. She is an interdisciplinary scholar who seeks to merge science\, policy\, and the arts. \nBring your own food & drink. Free to participate. No registration is required. Help us grow a happier coastline! \nThis event is weather permitting; If we need to cancel due to heavy rain or inclement weather\, we will reschedule for Sunday June 26. If weather persists\, this event will be cancelled. You may want to bring sunglasses\, a jacket\, your own work gloves if you have them and a water bottle. \nWe will be convening at Middle Beach – Parking is free for all CT license plates (this is an easy way to score a great spot for the day!). \nAll clean-up supplies will be provided including trash grabbers\, buckets\, and gloves. You may want to bring sunglasses\, a jacket\, work gloves (if you have them)\, and a water bottle. Due to covid\, we will not be serving water or snacks during this event. There are vending machines on site\, or please bring your own. \nThis event is kid friendly. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Register Here” style=”flat” shape=”square” color=”warning” size=”lg” align=”center” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2F1AEYDCs9tbY4wh6Z8|target:_blank”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1654025513972{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nHammonasset Beach State Park is arguably among the top five birding destinations in the state and contains one of Connecticut’s most important natural areas with a variety of coastal habitats\, including dunes\, rocky headlands\, coastal forest\, coastal shrublands\, old fields\, and salt marsh habitats in addition to the open waters of Long Island Sound. \nJoin Anthony Zemba (Certified Ecologist with Land Tech Consultants and Rockfall Foundation board member)\, who will guide the tour. Mr. Zemba previously held the Director of Conservation Services position with the Connecticut Audubon Society.
