DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1680206700977{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\nEnvironmental Legislative Update \nLori Brown has been the Executive Director of the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters since 2000\, working to protect Connecticut’s environment by making environmental issues a priority for our elected leaders and holding lawmakers accountable by publishing an annual “Environmental Scorecard.” Lori has organized multiple public education and grassroots lobbying campaigns\, and has worked on political campaigns to elect pro-environment candidates across New York and Connecticut. She served on Governor Lamont’s transition team as a member of the Environment Committee assembled to provide policy recommendations to the incoming Lamont/Bysiewicz Administration. She is registered to lobby at the Connecticut General Assembly\, working with all of Connecticut’s statewide environmental advocacy groups to push for important legislation that shapes our state’s policies on air\, water\, land\, wildlife\, energy and climate change. \nPrior to CTLCV\, Lori helped to establish and directed the Sierra Club’s New York Chapter office. The history of these two properties link Colonel Wadsworth’s Legacy and The Rockfall Foundation. From potato farm to wild forest to outdoor classroom\, Rockfall Forest has a story to tell. \nColonel Clarence S. Wadsworth founded Rockfall Corporation (now The Rockfall Foundation) in 1935 “to establish\, maintain\, and care for parks and forest or wild land for the use and enjoyment of the public”. One of the Colonel’s land holdings was a large plot in Middlefield and Rockfall. He entrusted the land to Rockfall Corporation\, with a small section known as “The Captain’s Field” retained for use by his son\, Seymour Wadsworth. \nIn 1941\, after Colonel Wadsworth’s death\, the largest portion of the land\, 267 acres known as the “Great Falls Region” was donated by Rockfall Corporation to the Connecticut State Park and Forest commission. The State still maintains this land\, the present day Wadsworth Falls State Park. Adjacent Captain’s Field\, in the meantime\, was leased out by Seymour and used for potato farming in the 1940s and 1950s. After Seymour’s passing\, Captain’s Field was transferred to Rockfall Corporation for preservation. To this day\, The Rockfall Foundation continues to protect these remaining 16 acres of land\, which has reverted to forest since farming was abandoned. Everyone can make a difference with the choices they make with their outdoor landscaping. The more organic\, sustainably planted\, pollinator-friendly yards there are\, the more bees\, butterflies and birds can reside there. It is time to teach the next generation a new way of thinking about their yards and bring nature home. \nDiane St John is the manager of Natureworks Garden Center and has a BFA in Photography from Columbia College in Chicago and a Landscape Design Certificate from Naugatuck Valley Community College. After obtaining the Landscape Design Certificate from NVCC\, the UConn Master Gardener certification\, and an Accredited Organic Land Care Professional Certification through CT NOFA\, she became increasingly aware of the overuse of synthetic chemicals on lawns and gardens. She became a passionate educator of organic land care practices and saw the decline of the monarch butterfly as a symbol of educating the public on why organic methods are so important. Join us for a bird walk around Meigs Point and Willard Island. Let’s see how many different species we can find. \nJoin Anthony Zemba (Certified Ecologist with Land Tech Consultants and Rockfall Foundation board member)\, who will guide the tour. Mr. Zemba previously held the Director of Conservation Services position with the Connecticut Audubon Society. Additionally\, recipients of the 2022 Annual Environmental Grants will display their projects and programs. An hors d’oeuvres and wine reception kicks off the evening\, followed by a brief meeting\, the awards ceremony\, and multimedia presentations by three grantees. \n  \nWinners of the 2022 Environmental Champion Awards who will be honored are as follows. \nKrishna Winston will receive Tom ODell Distinguished Service Awards\, honoring her long-term accomplishments in environmental conservation and preservation. Certificates of Appreciation will be presented to Jen Malaguti and Geoff Picard to recognize their significant environmental programs and projects. One of the Colonel’s land holdings was a large plot in Middlefield and Rockfall. He entrusted the land to Rockfall Corporation\, with a small section known as “The Captain’s Field” retained for use by his son\, Seymour Wadsworth.[/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider size=”10″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1632843649064{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]In 1941\, after Colonel Wadsworth’s death\, the largest portion of the land\, 267 acres known as the “Great Falls Region” was donated by Rockfall Corporation to the Connecticut State Park and Forest commission. The State still maintains this land\, the present day Wadsworth Falls State Park. Adjacent Captain’s Field\, in the meantime\, was leased out by Seymour and used for potato farming in the 1940s and 1950s. After Seymour’s passing\, Captain’s Field was transferred to Rockfall Corporation for preservation. To this day\, The Rockfall Foundation continues to protect these remaining 16 acres of land\, which has reverted to forest since farming was abandoned. The presentation is based on his new book\, “And So The Tomb Remains…” telling of the former state archaeologist’s investigations into five 18/19th century sepulchers while delving into family histories and genealogies\, as well as archaeological and forensic sciences that helped identify the entombed. Bellantoni\, PhD\nEmeritus Connecticut State Archaeologist  \nDr. Nicholas F. Bellantoni serves as the state archaeologist emeritus with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History at the University of Connecticut. He received his doctorate in anthropology from UConn in 1987 and was shortly thereafter appointed state archaeologist. He also serves as an Adjunct Associate Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at UConn\, and is a former president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut and the National Association of State Archeologists.  \nAbout his book\, “And So The Tomb Remained” by Nick Bellantoni: \nStone and brick tombs were repositories for the physical remains of many of Connecticut’s wealthiest and influential families. Mr. Zemba previously held the Director of Conservation Services position with the Connecticut Audubon Society.
