SUMMARY:Adapting to a Changing Shoreline: Climate Impacts on Connecticut’s Coast
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1728500124580{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\nA presentation by Julianna Barrett\, PhD.\nSaybrook Point Resort and Marina\n2 Bridge Street\, Old Saybrook CT\nStorms Irene and Sandy showed how storms can significantly alter the shoreline of Connecticut through flooding and erosion\, much as the Hurricane of 1938 did. The impacts of climate change on municipalities are likely to result in more intense rainfall events\, higher air and water temperatures\, sea level rise leading to more vulnerable beaches and dunes\, and increases to the land and infrastructure that could be inundated by rising sea levels and riverine flooding. \nJuliana Barrett\, PhD\, will discuss the impacts of climate change on the Connecticut coast and Long Island Sound. Dr. Barrett will explore the dynamic Connecticut coast and how changes to the coast are increasing due to climate change. She will discuss current and projected climate change impacts for coastal communities and Long Island Sound over the next 50 years. \nThis event is limited to 50 attendees. \nFood and a Cash Bar will be provided. \nSponsored by Saybrook Point Resort and Marina\, and Landtech. \nThank you for your interest in the ‘Adapting to a Changing Shoreline: Climate Impacts on Connecticut’s Coast’ event. \nUnfortunately\, we have reached full capacity and are no longer able to accommodate additional guests at this time. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”17273″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Register Now” color=”success” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.lglforms.com%2Fform_engine%2Fs%2FBF2kHjba6sRDbzyMx4fGkA%3Ft%3D1727194614|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1726507080062{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Bio: Juliana Barrett is with the University of Connecticut Sea Grant College Program. Her work focuses on climate change adaptation and coastal habitat management working with Connecticut’s municipalities\, NGO’s\, state and federal partners and most recently\, UConn undergrads through the Climate Corps program. Prior to coming to Sea Grant in 2006 she worked with CT DEP on management plans for state natural areas and for The Nature Conservancy as the Director of the Connecticut River Tidelands Last Great Places Program. Tick repellant is suggested. \nBonus: You will have a chance to sample some invasive plant recipes. \nWhat are Invasive Plants?  \nUCONN’s Invasive Plants Council best describes invasive plants as “non-native plants that are disruptive in a way that causes environmental or economic harm or harm to human health. In minimally managed areas\, invasive plants crowd out native plants. The presence of invasive plants alters how plants\, animals\, soil\, and water interact within native ecosystems\, often causing harm to other species in addition to the plants that have been crowded out.” \nLocation: Meet at 9:45 in the Middlefield Memorial School parking lot\, 124 Hubbard St\, Middlefield\, CT. We will be looking for Spring migrants and breeding resident birds among the park’s varied habitats\, which include a forested swamp\, a scrub/shrub swamp\, a pond\, the CT River and its associated freshwater tidal emergent wetlands\, and open meadows. We will walk about a 2-mile loop on open\, flat terrain. But wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (but we will try to avoid walking in wet areas)\, and protect yourself from ticks. We plan to go until about 10:30 AM with the option to go longer if desired. SUMMARY:The Elements: 'The Seeds of Vandana Shiva' Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1693235720230{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]How did the willful daughter of a Himalayan forest conservator become the world’s most powerful opponent of Monsanto? The Seeds of Vandana Shiva\, a feature-length documentary\, presents the remarkable life story of the Gandhian eco-activist and agro-ecologist\, Vandana Shiva. \nA classic David versus Goliath tale\, the film shows how Vandana\, a brilliant scientist\, became Monsanto’s worst nightmare and a rock star of the international organic food movement. \nVandana Shiva is a modern-day revolutionary who has been fighting a heroic battle on behalf of humanity and the ecologically besieged natural systems that support us for forty years. However\, she is opposed by powerful multinational corporations invested in continuing their degenerative but lucrative agricultural practices. By profiling one of the greatest activists of modern times\, the film looks at the epic struggle over who controls the world’s food systems and asks the question\, who will prevail? \nThe film screening on October 16\, at 7 PM is open to the public and free of charge. \nThe Seeds of Vandana Shiva/Running time: 1 hour – 25 minutes \nLocation: Wesleyan University’s Center for Film Studies – Goldsmith Family Cinema 301 Washington Terrace\, Middletown\, CT 06457 \nFace masks are optional\, unless there are changes in Wesleyan University’s Covid policy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Click Here to Sign Up” color=”success” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fforms.gle%2F242J3XQrYVo3yEkw7|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video title=”The Seeds of Vandana Shiva Trailer” link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEqTo8lDivs”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Edible Plants and Fungi Walk- SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1695648803986{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\nSOLD OUT\nEdible Plants and Fungi Walk: Cost $10 (limit 25 adults)\nJoin us at the Pattaconk Reservoir on Saturday\, September. 30th at 10:00 am for a forage walk! \n\n\nJoin The 3 Foragers as they teach the edible plants and fungi of autumn on a foraging walk. Autumn is a time of bounty and harvest for woodland creatures and foragers alike: nuts are falling to the forest floor\, fruits are ripening and scenting the crisp fall air\, roots and tubers are thickening up in anticipation of sustaining the plants through the tough winter\, and edible fungi can be found in astounding amounts. Learn how to identify\, sustainably harvest\, and prepare the wild foods of autumn\, from acorns through minty wintergreen leaves\, including golden honey mushrooms and maitake\, the “dancing mushroom.”   \nThe 3 Foragers are a family from southeastern Connecticut who have been identifying\, photographing\, and cooking with the edible plants and fungi of New England for more than 17 years. Their blog\, Facebook page\, and book all focus on family-friendly\, environmentally sustainable harvest of both our native and invasive species of plants\, and ways to incorporate these foods into your diet with original recipes. \nNO DOGS\, PLEASE – AS PER THE REQUEST OF THE INSTRUCTORS. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”15995″ img_size=”medium”][vc_single_image image=”16009″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dimension=”flat” corner_style=”pointed” size=”large” letter_spacing=”0″ icon=”” icon_anim=”none” target=”_self” nofollow=”false” align=”center” button_custom_width=”0″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”15″ margin_right=”15″ outline_skin=”dark” outline_active_color=”” outline_active_text_color=”” outline_hover_bg_color=”” outline_hover_color=”” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” text_color=”light” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”][vc_column][mk_button dimension=”flat” corner_style=”rounded” size=”large” url=”https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/x9uyNQQzzdCxNpwYe_CNNA?t=1690474317″ target=”_blank” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”]Forage Walk Sign-up[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1690479909980{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Note: We are also offering an additional Classroom Presentation of Edible Wild Plants and Fungi of Autumn on September 28.
