SUMMARY:"Comfort Zone:" Latest film in The Elements Environmental Film Series
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1520282865374{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]COMFORT ZONE will screen at Middlesex Community College on Monday April 2nd at 7:00 PM in Chapman Hall\, as part of The Elements: An Annual Environmental Film Series. \nThe film explores what climate change means in our own backyards\, in a country that is a heavy producer of greenhouse gasses\, and a region where people might welcome a little warmth. It is the consciousness-changing story of three ordinary Americans confronting what climate change means for us – scientifically\, economically and personally – when the problem challenges our very sense of who we are. \n\nThe Elements: An Annual Environmental Film Series is presented by the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District\, Middlesex Community College Environmental Science Program\, The Rockfall Foundation\, and Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts and College of the Environment. Four screenings take place throughout the year\, alternating locations between Chapman Hall at Middlesex Community College and the Center for Film Studies at Wesleyan University. SUMMARY:The Elements: An Environmental Film Series presents 'Just Eat It'
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1516727210294{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nWe all love food. As a society\, we devour countless cooking shows\, culinary magazines and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash?\n\n Just Eat It documents filmmakers and food lovers Jen Rustemeyer (Producer) and Grant Baldwin (Director/Editor/Composer) as they investigate the issue of waste from farm\, through retail\, all the way to their own fridge. After their eyes are opened to the billions of dollars of good food thrown away each year in North America\, they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure\, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and compelling. Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiration dates\, perfect produce and portion sizes\, and reveals the core of this issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers\, retailers\, inspiring organizations\, and consumers to the table in a story that is equal parts education and entertainment.\n\nAfter the film\, we welcome you to stay for an informal discussion.\nThe Elements: An Annual Environmental Film Series is presented by the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District\, Middlesex Community College Environmental Science Program\, The Rockfall Foundation\, and Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts and College of the Environment. Four screenings take place throughout the year\, alternating locations between Chapman Hall at Middlesex Community College and the Center for Film Studies at Wesleyan University. SUMMARY:The Elements: An Environmental Film Series presents 'A Plastic Ocean'
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1506024793265{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]The proliferation of plastic products in the last 70 years or so has been extraordinary; quite simply we cannot now live without them. We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year\, half of which is for single use. More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. \nPlastic is cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications. However\, these qualities have also resulted in it becoming an environmental issue. We have developed a “disposable” lifestyle and estimates are that around 50% of plastic is used just once and thrown away. \nPlastic is a valuable resource and plastic pollution is an unnecessary and unsustainable waste of that resource. \nA Plastic Ocean documents the newest science\, proving how plastics\, once they enter the oceans\, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues\, and eventually consumed by us. \nRethink plastic. Learn more at Plastic Ocean Foundation. \nThe Elements: An Annual Environmental Film Series is presented by the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District\, Middlesex Community College Environmental Science Program\, The Rockfall Foundation\, and Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts and College of the Environment. Most people buy their food in supermarkets and don’t have a chance to meet their farmer. But in more affluent communities\, farm-to-table restaurants\, farmer’s markets and CSAs are booming and the new farmers are celebrated. \nThere is another farmer who is left out of the local food celebration. \nNew England has lost over 10\,000 dairy farms in the past 50 years; fewer than 2\,000 farms remain. Collectively\, they tend 1.2 million acres of farmland and produce almost all of the milk consumed in New England. In our enthusiasm for the new food movement\, we often overlook the farmers at the foundation of the regional agricultural economy. A truly sustainable local food system that benefits everyone will rely on all of our farmers. \nThis is a FREE event. \nThe Elements: An Annual Environmental Film Series was launched in 2015 by the Connecticut River Coastal Conservation District\, Middlesex Community College Environmental Science Program\, The Rockfall Foundation\, and Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts and College of the Environment.
