SUMMARY:Rockfall Environmental Book Club
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″]The Rockfall Environmental Book Club meets every other month at the historic deKoven House in Middletown to read and talk about books on nature\, climate\, ecology\, and sustainability. It’s a chance to learn together\, share ideas\, and connect with others who care about the environment. All are welcome—no RSVP required\, and don’t worry if you haven’t finished the book. Just bring your curiosity and join the conversation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text margin_bottom=”0″]Date: Wednesday\, July 8th\, 2026\nTime: 6:00 – 7:00 pm\nLocation: deKoven House Community Center\, 27 Washington St\, Middletown \n \n\nFathoms: The World in the Whale by Rebecca Giggs\n\n\n\n\nWhen writer Rebecca Giggs encountered a humpback whale stranded on her local beachfront in Australia\, she began to wonder how the lives of whales reflect the condition of our oceans. Fathoms: The World in the Whale is “a work of bright and careful genius” (Robert Moor\, New York Times bestselling author of On Trails)\, one that blends natural history\, philosophy\, and science to explore: How do whales experience ecological change? How has whale culture been both understood and changed by human technology? What can observing whales teach us about the complexity\, splendor\, and fragility of life on earth? \nIn Fathoms\, we learn about whales so rare they have never been named\, whale songs that sweep across hemispheres in annual waves of popularity\, and whales that have modified the chemical composition of our planet’s atmosphere. We travel to Japan to board the ships that hunt whales and delve into the deepest seas to discover how plastic pollution pervades our earth’s undersea environment. \nWith the immediacy of Rachel Carson and the lush prose of Annie Dillard\, Giggs gives us a “masterly” (The New Yorker) exploration of the natural world even as she addresses what it means to write about nature at a time of environmental crisis. With depth and clarity\, she outlines the challenges we face as we attempt to understand the perspectives of other living beings\, and our own place on an evolving planet. Evocative and inspiring\, Fathoms “immediately earns its place in the pantheon of classics of the new golden age of environmental writing” (Literary Hub). \n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

To survive and thrive while rooted in a single spot\, plants have adapted ingenious methods of survival. In recent years\, scientists have learned about their ability to communicate\, recognize their kin and behave socially\, hear sounds\, morph their bodies to blend into their surroundings\, store useful memories that inform their life cycle\, and trick animals into behaving to their benefit―a fascinating display of plant behavior and sensory abilities\, to name just a few remarkable talents. \nThe Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency\, consciousness\, and intelligence. In this captivating exploration of plant intelligence\, we see that plants\, rather than imitate human intelligence\, have perhaps formed a parallel system. What is intelligent life if not a vine that grows leaves to blend into the shrub on which it climbs\, a flower that shapes its bloom to fit exactly the beak of its pollinator\, a pea seedling that can hear water flowing and make its way toward it? Zoë Schlanger takes us across the globe\, digging into her own memories and into the soil with the scientists who have spent their waking days studying these amazing entities up close. \nWhat can we learn about life on Earth from the living things that thrive\, adapt\, consume\, and accommodate simultaneously? More important\, what do we owe these life forms once we come to understand their rich and varied abilities? Examining the latest epiphanies in botanical research\, Schlanger spotlights the intellectual struggles among the researchers conceiving a wholly new view of their subject\, offering a glimpse of a field in turmoil as plant scientists debate the tenets of ongoing discoveries and how insights into plant communication influence our understanding of what a plant is. \nWe need plants to survive. But what do they need us for―if at all? An eye-opening and informative look at the ecosystem we live in\, this book challenges us to rethink the role of plants―and our own place―in the natural world\, tackling the enthralling question of plant consciousness along the way.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”19579″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]
