SUMMARY:90th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1753885860485{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nThe Rockfall Foundation is proud to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2025. Founded in 1935 by Colonel Clarence S. Wadsworth “to establish\, maintain and care for parks and forest or wild lands for the enjoyment of the public\,” the Foundation continues this mission throughout the Lower Connecticut River Valley. \nAs a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 06-6000700)\, we support environmental education and conservation through community grants\, awards\, the annual environmental symposium\, film screenings\, repair cafés\, and hands-on programs like bird walks and invasive plant workshops. We also steward open space properties and operate the historic deKoven House as a community meeting space and home to local environmental organizations. \nJoin us for an evening of celebration and inspiration as we honor our history and look ahead to the future. \n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1753885918565{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n \n	\n \n \n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n	\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n[/vc_column_text][mk_padding_divider][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1753886844511{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\nEvent Highlights\n\nDate: Wednesday\, October 8\, 2025\nTime: 5:30–8:30 pm\nLocation: Wadsworth Mansion\, Middletown\, CT\n\nThe evening begins with food\, beverages\, and live music\, along with time to explore table displays from Rockfall’s 2025 grant recipients\, highlighting their work in environmental education\, conservation\, and stewardship throughout the Lower Connecticut River Valley. SUMMARY:Rockfall Environmental Book Club
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1754579390095{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]We’re excited to introduce a new environmental education and community-building program at The Rockfall Foundation. Meeting every other month at the deKoven House\, the Rockfall Environmental Book Club will explore topics of nature\, climate\, ecology\, and sustainability. All are welcome to join! \nThe first Rockfall Environmental Book Club meeting will take place on Tuesday\, September 9\, at the deKoven House (27 Washington Street\, Middletown). We’ll be discussing Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. \nAs a botanist\, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation\, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass\, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on “a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific\, as sacred as it is historical\, as clever as it is wise” (Elizabeth Gilbert). \n[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”18215″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Human urine contains vital nutrients for growing crops. When flushed\, urine contributes to nutrient pollution in the Long Island Sound\, contributing to harmful algal blooms and damaging aquatic ecosystems. Instead of becoming pollution\, urine can be recycled as a safe\, effective fertilizer for farms and gardens. By completing the food nutrient cycle upstream\, we can help protect our downstream neighbors — and grow an abundance of food from locally sourced nutrients. \nFor over a decade\, the Rich Earth Institute has been advancing peecycling in the US\, building a vision of regional nutrient sovereignty and climate resilient sanitation. The Institute operates the nation’s first and largest community-scale peecycling program – part of a growing global movement for circular sanitation systems. This presentation will cover this unique program\, the issues of nutrient pollution in the Connecticut River Watershed\, the Rich Earth Institute’s leading edge research\, and opportunities to get involved with the global peecycling movement. Together\, we can pee the change! \n🍕 Pizza will be provided at this event\n📅 Date: Thursday\, May 29\n🕙 Time: 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM\n📍 Location: deKoven House Community Center\, 27 Washington Street\, Middletown\, CT.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hms2rE8B5as&t=4s”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dimension=”flat” corner_style=”pointed” size=”large” letter_spacing=”0″ icon=”” icon_anim=”none” target=”_self” nofollow=”false” align=”center” button_custom_width=”0″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”15″ margin_right=”15″ outline_skin=”dark” outline_active_color=”” outline_active_text_color=”” outline_hover_bg_color=”” outline_hover_color=”” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” text_color=”light” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”][vc_column][mk_button dimension=”flat” corner_style=”rounded” size=”large” url=”https://forms.gle/2J2f3fpDeFjNeD1A7″ target=”_blank” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”]Sign-up Form[/mk_button][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Tick repellant is suggested. \nBonus: You will have a chance to sample some invasive plant recipes. \nWhat are Invasive Plants?  \nUCONN’s Invasive Plants Council best describes invasive plants as “non-native plants that are disruptive in a way that causes environmental or economic harm or harm to human health. In minimally managed areas\, invasive plants crowd out native plants. The presence of invasive plants alters how plants\, animals\, soil\, and water interact within native ecosystems\, often causing harm to other species in addition to the plants that have been crowded out.” \nLocation: Meet at 9:45 in the Middlefield Memorial School parking lot\, 124 Hubbard St\, Middlefield\, CT. We will meet at the parking lot at the entrance of the park (the parking lot is on the left as soon as you enter the park and cross the railroad tracks) at 8:30 AM. \nFrom there\, we will walk south along the edge of the wooded wetland on the west side of the open meadow field. We will be looking for Spring migrants and breeding resident birds among the park’s varied habitats\, which include a forested swamp\, a scrub/shrub swamp\, a pond\, the CT River and its associated freshwater tidal emergent wetlands\, and open meadows. We will walk about a 2-mile loop on open\, flat terrain. But wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (but we will try to avoid walking in wet areas)\, and protect yourself from ticks. SUMMARY:Meet Your Greens: Backyard Bugs with Brian Stewart
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1743428014459{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\nPerk on Main\n386 Main St\, Middletown\, CT 06457\nAs a gardener and nature lover\, Brian Stewart believes that a minute spent outside is worth ten spent indoors. On spring days\, he enjoys observing wildlife\, especially the annual return of the warblers\, a thrilling moment best experienced after their arrival but before the trees fully leaf out. However\, the majority of Brian’s wildlife-watching time is devoted to insects. Their season is long — virtually endless — and because their habitats are small and abundant\, there are countless places to find them. Not only are insects visually captivating\, but they are also fascinating to observe as they go about their routines. \nOn his personal “backyard safaris” across his quarter-acre property\, Brian has photographed and identified 952 species so far and counting. In this presentation\, he will share some of his favorite images and stories\, hoping to spark the same appreciation for these remarkable little creatures in others. \nAdmission: This event is free for Rockfall Foundation members and a $10 donation fee for non-members. \nRegister Below\n✅ Rockfall Foundation Members (Free Registration)\n💳 Non-Members ($10 Donation Fee) \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”17696″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dimension=”flat” corner_style=”pointed” size=”large” letter_spacing=”0″ icon=”” icon_anim=”none” target=”_self” nofollow=”false” align=”center” button_custom_width=”0″ margin_top=”0″ margin_bottom=”15″ margin_right=”15″ outline_skin=”dark” outline_active_color=”” outline_active_text_color=”” outline_hover_bg_color=”” outline_hover_color=”” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” text_color=”light” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”][vc_column width=”1/2″][mk_button dimension=”flat” corner_style=”rounded” size=”large” url=”https://www.eventbrite.com/e/meet-your-greens-backyard-bugs-with-brian-stewart-tickets-1306846034669?aff=oddtdtcreator” target=”_blank” bg_color=”#01baef” btn_hover_bg=”#01baef” btn_hover_txt_color=”#ffffff”]👉 REGISTER HERE[/mk_button][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Adapting to a Changing Shoreline: Climate Impacts on Connecticut’s Coast
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1728500124580{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]\n\nA presentation by Julianna Barrett\, PhD.\nSaybrook Point Resort and Marina\n2 Bridge Street\, Old Saybrook CT\nStorms Irene and Sandy showed how storms can significantly alter the shoreline of Connecticut through flooding and erosion\, much as the Hurricane of 1938 did. The impacts of climate change on municipalities are likely to result in more intense rainfall events\, higher air and water temperatures\, sea level rise leading to more vulnerable beaches and dunes\, and increases to the land and infrastructure that could be inundated by rising sea levels and riverine flooding. \nJuliana Barrett\, PhD\, will discuss the impacts of climate change on the Connecticut coast and Long Island Sound. Dr. Barrett will explore the dynamic Connecticut coast and how changes to the coast are increasing due to climate change. She will discuss current and projected climate change impacts for coastal communities and Long Island Sound over the next 50 years. \nThis event is limited to 50 attendees. \nFood and a Cash Bar will be provided. \nSponsored by Saybrook Point Resort and Marina\, and Landtech. \nThank you for your interest in the ‘Adapting to a Changing Shoreline: Climate Impacts on Connecticut’s Coast’ event. \nUnfortunately\, we have reached full capacity and are no longer able to accommodate additional guests at this time. \n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”17273″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Register Now” color=”success” css=”” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fsecure.lglforms.com%2Fform_engine%2Fs%2FBF2kHjba6sRDbzyMx4fGkA%3Ft%3D1727194614|target:_blank”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1726507080062{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Bio: Juliana Barrett is with the University of Connecticut Sea Grant College Program.
