Intermediate level hike with easy sections and one very steep section gaining 150 feet. \nFree. All are welcome. No dogs\, please. Bring sturdy hiking boots/shoes\, tick repellant and water. Hiking poles optional. Threat of morning rain postpones to the next day\, November 10th at 1pm. \n  \nTrail head location: Meet behind Essex Financial\, 176 Westbrook Rd. Bill is president of the Connecticut Queen Breeders Cooperative\, serves on the board of the Connecticut Beekeepers Association\, and works with the Eastern Apicultural Society as an educator and evaluator of aspiring Master Beekeepers. Bill also holds monthly “Bee Talks” at deKoven House where beekeepers from all over the state gather to share beekeeping knowledge. Burgers and hotdogs (meat and non-meat options)\, corn-on-the-cob\, watermelon\, and soft drinks to be served at the pavilion on Crystal Lake at McCutcheon Park\, Middletown. Potluck dishes to share would be a welcome addition. Swim in Crystal Lake or bring your paddleboard or kayak. Wildlife\, birds\, and hiking trails surround the area\, with a guided walk** beginning at 11:30am\, concluding in time for the picnic at 1pm. All are welcome to join the hike and/or the picnic. Approximately 1.5-2 mile hike meeting at the pavilion at 11:30\, wrapping up around 1pm for the picnic. Our 3.3 mile hike will take in fine\, pristine vistas of the Connecticut River. We will discover a tiny\, hidden beach\, along with wooded highlands along the river\, and a small stream and its canyon. Mostly moderate terrain with some limited steep parts. We’ll hike at a very gentle pace\, allowing time to take in the views as we traverse many newly-built trails all around this attractive\, little-known\, and mostly undeveloped State Park. Bring boots\, water. Families with kids 8+ experienced in hiking are welcome. Due to recent rains\, please bring bug repellent. No dogs\, please.\n\n  \nVery limited parking so car-pooling is encouraged. If you arrive right at 1 pm and the lot is full\, you may need to be shuttled or walk in from adjoining parking elsewhere. A carpool will meet at 12:30 at the deKoven House\, 27 Washington St. Middletown\, departing at 12:40 for the trailhead.\nTrailhead is at the small parking lot on E. side of 115 Field Rd\, Cromwell\, just south of the RR track crossing. Steve will give a brief talk on opening up Connecticut’s waterways for migratory fish. \nSteve is a Supervising Fisheries Biologist with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Fisheries Division\, overseeing the Diadromous Fisheries and Habitat Conservation and Enhancement programs. Throughout his 30+ year career with DEEP\, Steve has given a strong voice to diadromous fish across the state\, region\, nation and world. His efforts have led to the construction of over 50 fish passage structures and numerous dam removals in Connecticut\, restoring access for diadromous fish to hundreds of miles of historic habitat. \nJoin us for socializing and to hear the guest speaker! \n  \n\nAnd for those of you not familiar with Meet Your Greens: Middletown Green Drinks\, this monthly event provides networking opportunities for anyone who is interested in making connections and exchanging news about emerging environmental issues to help keep Lower Connecticut River Valley communities green and growing. Skilled volunteers will help fix and teach you how to fix your things—saving you money and keeping items working and out of the garbage. Tool use and help is free. Enjoy rocky terrain along an open ridge with expansive views over Black Pond and facing westward. Moderately difficult terrain at a fast pace\, with 800 feet of elevation gain. Prior hiking experience or equivalent physical fitness recommended. \n  \nFree. Non-members welcome.  No dogs\, please.  Bring sturdy hiking boots/shoes\, snacks and water. Steady precipitation or snow cover cancels. \n  \nTrail head location: Route 147 in Middlefield\, just south of the intersection with Route 66. GPS address: 429 CT-147\, Middlefield\, CT. Please park cars snugly so everyone fits. \n  \nDirections: From Route 66 in Middlefield\, CT\, turn south onto Route 147 (across from Guida’s Restaurant). Trailhead pull-off parking is almost immediately on the right. Please park cars snugly so everyone fits. Join us for drinks and conversation 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Our guest speaker will be Lori Brown\, Executive Director of the Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV). CTLCV is a bipartisan\, statewide\, nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting Connecticut’s environment by making environmental issues a priority for our elected leaders. Lori will give a brief talk on the major environmental issues and initiatives facing Connecticut in the current legislative session and how they relate to the national and global landscape. \nLori Brown has been the Executive Director of CTLCV since 2000. She has prior experience as the Communications Director for the New York League of Conservation Voters\, as a consultant on projects with the Federation of State Conservation Voter Leagues\, and as Chapter Director for the Sierra Club’s Manhattan office. Lori has organized multiple public education and grassroots lobbying campaigns\, and has worked on political campaigns for pro-environment candidates across New York and Connecticut. She served most recently on the boards of the Farmington Land Trust and Recovery Wing\, a wildlife rehabilitation clinic.
