But centuries of pollution and other abuse have gradually been killing off its marine life and have pushed the Sound to the brink of disaster. This fascinating book traces the history of the Sound and its use as a resource from the time of contact between the Native Americans and Dutch traders through the suburban sprawl of recent decades-and tells how a group of scientists and citizens has been working to save the Sound from ruin. Tom Andersen begins by describing the dramatic events of the summer of 1987\, when a condition called hypoxia (lack of dissolved oxygen in the water brought about by a combination of pollution and other factors) killed large numbers of fish and lobsters in the Sound. He discusses how scientists first documented and explained the development of hypoxia and how research and cleanup are now being carried out to restore the Sound. Interweaving current events\, natural history\, and human history\, Andersen presents a cautionary tale of exploitation without concern for preservation.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”19893″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

To survive and thrive while rooted in a single spot\, plants have adapted ingenious methods of survival. In recent years\, scientists have learned about their ability to communicate\, recognize their kin and behave socially\, hear sounds\, morph their bodies to blend into their surroundings\, store useful memories that inform their life cycle\, and trick animals into behaving to their benefit―a fascinating display of plant behavior and sensory abilities\, to name just a few remarkable talents. \nThe Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency\, consciousness\, and intelligence. In this captivating exploration of plant intelligence\, we see that plants\, rather than imitate human intelligence\, have perhaps formed a parallel system. What is intelligent life if not a vine that grows leaves to blend into the shrub on which it climbs\, a flower that shapes its bloom to fit exactly the beak of its pollinator\, a pea seedling that can hear water flowing and make its way toward it? Zoë Schlanger takes us across the globe\, digging into her own memories and into the soil with the scientists who have spent their waking days studying these amazing entities up close. \nWhat can we learn about life on Earth from the living things that thrive\, adapt\, consume\, and accommodate simultaneously? More important\, what do we owe these life forms once we come to understand their rich and varied abilities? Examining the latest epiphanies in botanical research\, Schlanger spotlights the intellectual struggles among the researchers conceiving a wholly new view of their subject\, offering a glimpse of a field in turmoil as plant scientists debate the tenets of ongoing discoveries and how insights into plant communication influence our understanding of what a plant is. \nWe need plants to survive. But what do they need us for―if at all? An eye-opening and informative look at the ecosystem we live in\, this book challenges us to rethink the role of plants―and our own place―in the natural world\, tackling the enthralling question of plant consciousness along the way.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”19579″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row]

How has whale culture been both understood and changed by human technology? What can observing whales teach us about the complexity\, splendor\, and fragility of life on earth? \nIn Fathoms\, we learn about whales so rare they have never been named\, whale songs that sweep across hemispheres in annual waves of popularity\, and whales that have modified the chemical composition of our planet’s atmosphere. We travel to Japan to board the ships that hunt whales and delve into the deepest seas to discover how plastic pollution pervades our earth’s undersea environment. \nWith the immediacy of Rachel Carson and the lush prose of Annie Dillard\, Giggs gives us a “masterly” (The New Yorker) exploration of the natural world even as she addresses what it means to write about nature at a time of environmental crisis. With depth and clarity\, she outlines the challenges we face as we attempt to understand the perspectives of other living beings\, and our own place on an evolving planet. Evocative and inspiring\, Fathoms “immediately earns its place in the pantheon of classics of the new golden age of environmental writing” (Literary Hub). \n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
